What is a Heart Attack?
A heart attack, also known as a myocardial infarction, occurs when the flow of blood to a part of the heart is blocked for a long enough time that part of the heart muscle is damaged or dies. This is often caused by a blockage in one or more of the coronary arteries due to a buildup of plaque (a combination of fat, cholesterol, and other substances).
How to Deal with a Heart Attack Alone
- Call Emergency Services: Immediately call for emergency medical help. Provide your exact location and describe your symptoms.
- Take Aspirin: If you have access to aspirin, chew and swallow an adult-dose aspirin (325 mg). This can help to thin the blood and reduce damage to the heart.
- Rest and Stay Calm: Sit down and try to stay as calm as possible. Avoid any physical activity that can further strain your heart.
- Loosen Tight Clothing: Loosen any tight clothing to help you breathe more easily.
- Monitor Your Symptoms: Note any changes in your symptoms and inform emergency responders when they arrive.
- Prepare for CPR: If you become unconscious and are unable to breathe normally, you may need to perform CPR on yourself, if possible, or indicate to someone nearby that you need CPR.
Remember, time is critical during a heart attack. Quick and effective action can save your life.
